State-owned National Power Corp. is pushing for the creation of the Philippine Dam Regulatory Authority to promote dam safety and ensure compliance of the local structures with international dam standards.
Napocor made the proposal during the recent meeting of member agencies of the Philippine National Committee on Large Dams, which convened to set the direction of the group this year.
Among the plans the committee aims to accomplish are the drafting and adoption of Philippine dam guidelines and the creation of the Philippine Dam Regulatory Authority.
Napocor president and committee chairman Ma. Gladys Cruz-Sta. Rita said she learned from Filipino dam expert and engineer Roderick dela Cruz that the Philippines was now one of the few countries in the world without a dam regulator.
“Though we at NPC is very particular on following international safety guidelines and standards, there are more and more private companies being involved now in dams management. Other government agencies like NIA [National Irrigation Administration] also have dams of their own,” Sta. Rita said.
