National Power Corporation (Napocor) finally finished the long-delayed transmission line project that will give a more reliable electricity to some major areas in Palawan seven years after the construction of the project supposedly started.

A statement said that the state-owned agency, together with the Provincial Government of Palawan, has finally switched on the 111-kilometer stretch 69 kV Puerto Princesa to Roxas transmission line, a significant fraction of the Palawan backbone transmission.

“With the completion of the project, we now have a stronger transmission and a more reliable electricity for over 80,000 households, commercial and industrial establishments in portions of Puerto Princesa and Roxas,” said Napocor President Ma. Gladys Cruz-Sta. Rita.

President Sta. Rita said the project is a “a testament that anything is possible for people who looks toward the same goal”, revealing that the project has been stalled for seven years.

“This project has been stalled for seven years due to a legal deadlock on right-of-way issues. Upon my assumption as president in 2013, we revisited the case and found ways on how to push through with the project. With this success, residents will no longer rely on locally generated power,” Sta. Rita said.

The P154-million project, which had four schedules for completion, commenced in August, 2006.

It has a total of 378 steel towers that cover 24 barangays from Barangay Langogan, Puerto Princesa to Barangay Umalad, Roxas.

Among the four schedules, two were completed in 2008 while the remaining two schedules were suspended.

Napocor then sought an acceptable arrangement with the parties involved. Thus, the rerouting of the transmission towers was agreed upon.

Napocor spent another P29 million in replacing the location of the two constructed transmission towers with four pole structures to re-route the line.

The Palawan backbone transmission which connects the southern and the northern part of the province now consists of three transmission line systems – the 80 km 69 KV Narra to Brooke’s Point, 90 km 69 KV Puerto to Narra, and the newly constructed 111km 69 KV Puerto Princesa to Roxas transmission line.

With the completion of these projects, Napocor now prepares to extend further the transmission line to Taytay, then to El Nido, Palawan.
