Manila Electric Co.’s plan to roll out prepaid electricity credits starting next year is fueling talk that candidates in the 2016 elections may purchase them as gifts or giveaways to voters and their constituents.
Meralco has conceded the scenario could happen as more cities in its franchise area expressed interest to roll out prepaid electricity. The power distributor is offering the prepaid electricity in denominations of P100, P200, P300, P500 and P1,000 per single purchase.
Meralco’s prepaid card will come in handy, as consumers could avoid the monthly experience of having to pay a one-time big amount.
Reloading under the prepaid electricity system will be convenient. It will be guaranteed by a full integration with the multi-channel payment infrastructure that ranges from traditional mom and pop stores as well as convenience stores to Meralco’s business centers.
Meralco has filed a petition with the Energy Regulatory Commission to offer prepaid electricity using its Advanced Metering Infrastructure Integrated Solution.
The prepaid metering solution will give consumers to have several options when purchasing prepaid credits. It will also enable them to monitor balance and consumption, among others.
Meralco will disconnect the consumer once there is negative peso balance in the account and reconnect within 15 minutes once the prepaid electricity system is loaded with any denomination.
