Fire incidents have quashed the merrymaking of some families during this holiday season, hence, power utility giant Manila Electric Company (Meralco) is advancing safety tips on electricity use that each consumer must keep in mind as the country welcomes the New Year.

The company has similarly noted that in cases of emergency, its crews will be on alert so they can immediately respond to customers’ need for assistance.

“Our Call Center is ready to respond to customers’ needs at any given time,” Meralco public information office head Joe Zaldarriaga has noted.

Meralco has stressed that the New Year’s Eve revelry will be very crucial because of the anticipated massive use of fireworks and pyrotechnics during the festivities.

It added “contingency measures are in place in case (its) facilities get affected by pyrotechnics and firecracker explosions.”

Yet the utility firm has emphasized that caution would still be the “best safety tip” they could count on in such events.

“Meralco asked all its customers including the general public to observe utmost safety,” the power distribution firm has pleaded.

It further advised the public “not to play with firecrackers and pyrotechnics near electric lines and transformers, as these may cause power interruptions and even result in accidents.”

Beyond that, Zaldarriaga has indicated that “confetti, party poppers and balloons can also cause electric trouble, so it would be best to use them in open spaces and far from our facilities.”

Despite the ongoing modernization and upgrade of the Meralco facilities, Zaldarriaga said “overhead lines may still be vulnerable to firecracker explosions, pyrotechnics and other party items.”
